Is Your Car Under Recall?
Every year, hundreds of vehicle recalls are issued by automakers. Often, drivers are unaware that their vehicle, or a part on their vehicle, has been recalled. Many people do not realize that all safety-related recall repair work should be done free of charge by a dealership that is authorized to do the specific recall related repair. In short, one out of every four cars that has been recalled has not been fixed. These vehicles are still driving around on U.S. roadways, endangering everyone on the road. This is an easily preventable safety issue.
To help address this problem, Consumer Reports has created a database of all vehicles that have been recalled. This database enables consumers to type in their car’s make and model and learn whether their car has been recalled. The site also provides tips and information on how to obtain the outstanding safety issues addressed.
Car Recalls
Both older and newer models can be subject to a recall. Some of the major recent recalls include the following:
- Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 (2009-2017). These pickup trucks have an issue with the gear shift. It can be taken out of the Park position, even if the brake is not depressed, or if the key is not in the ignition.
- Ford F-150 and Super Duty trucks (2015-2017). These trucks have been recalled due to an issue with their doors not opening or closing properly, which could result in the door opening while the vehicle is in motion. According to Consumer Reports, owners of these trucks should contact their local Ford dealer to determine whether their vehicle is part of this important recall.
- Kia Soul and Soul EV (2014-2016). These vehicles have been recalled again after an initial recall relating to a steering issue that may not have been properly performed. The defect could result in drivers losing control of their vehicle while in motion. If this issue affects your car, you may here a noise when the steering wheel is being turned.
- BMW 3 Series (2006-2011). In these cars, the wiring and electrical connectors for the heating and air conditioning systems can degrade. This may result in electrical fires within the vehicle, even when the car is shut off. BMW will replace the parts at no cost to the owner.
- Chrysler Pacifica (2017). This model minivan has been found to stall while starting, turning, or while driving at a low and steady speed. Hybrid versions of the Pacifica are not affected by this issue.
- Toyota Sienna (2005-2007) and (2009-2010). These minivans have a safety issue with the shift gear. It can be shifted out of the Park position even when the brake is not engaged. This increases the risk of a car rolling away, possibly into traffic.
