The Dangers of Vaping
The use of tobacco is the leading cause of preventable fatality because tobacco, especially using cigarettes, is one of the most widely abused substances in the world. Research tells us that most adult cigarette smokers want to quit, but nicotine, the main addictive chemical in cigarettes, is extremely addictive.
When inhaled via cigarette smoke, nicotine causes a rush of adrenalin and triggers an increase in dopamine, the brain’s happy chemical. This makes cigarette smoking addictive on both physical and psychological levels. As an alternative, many people turn to electronic cigarettes thinking that they are less addictive.
Also known as e-cigarettes, e-vaporizers, or electronic nicotine delivery systems, electronic cigarettes are battery-operated devices that are thought to be less harmful than actual cigarettes. When inhaled, electronic cigarettes deliver an aerosol that contains nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. Electronic cigarettes are vaporizers because they heat liquid, rather than burning it. The liquid becomes a vapor that is inhaled or vaped. Smokers of these devices are often referred to as vapers.
Although vapers may believe that electronic cigarettes are less harmful than traditional cigarettes, the jury is still out. In fact, new findings suggest chronic use could be very dangerous. High levels of toxic metals leak from the heating coils of these devices and are present in the aerosol that vapers inhale. Those chemicals may include lead, chromium, nickel, and manganese, among others. Significant levels of arsenic have also been detected. All these chemicals are toxic when inhaled. Moreover, vaping may cause lung, liver, immune, cardiovascular, and brain damage, along with cancer.
